In 1890, the president of the mainstream LDS Church issued a manifesto counseling the members of the Mormon church in Utah to stop participating in polygamous marriages. I had several ancestors living in the principle of plural marriage at this time, but one of their stories in particular has always stood out to me. My great-great-great grandfather had three wives and lived in a small community on the Arizona Strip, near the border with Utah, called Moccasin. When the manifesto of 1890 was released, he feared that he would be unable to continue living with his wives and perpetuating the practice of plural marriage within the United States, so
“At a loss, I went searching for more answers.” Continued…(For part 1 please read “Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness“) At a loss, I went searching for more answers. I had already been learning from a book called “Taking Charge of your Fertility” but decided to take it more seriously and start charting and taking my temp to try and understand my body and what was going on with it. A friend recommended the Tempdrop. Instead of spending more money on ovulation sticks I decided to get the Tempdrop and temp for several months to confirm when my body ovulates. “I had no other options…I was hopeful I would gain
“I have not publically shared any of the following details” Last month was pregnancy and infant loss awareness, and I have been thinking a lot on if I’m ready to share the infertility journey I’ve been on. Up until now, I have not publically shared any of the following details. I have decided at this point to share. When we were filming season 2 of Seeking Sister Wives, I was asked many times, “Are you planning on having kids soon?”. I remember trying to come up with a polite answer on how to respond to this question as it was incredibly personal, and a very vulnerable topic for me.
Adding children to the family Since we appeared in the second season of Seeking Sister Wife, we’ve frequently been asked about adding children to the family. Some of those questions have been for me, but most of them have been for Sophie. I can understand why; plural marriage is inherently connected with big families with a lot of kids. Polygamy across cultures and religious beliefs also has a lot of different standards, so some seem to believe that having children can be a way to measure a woman’s status. I understand why there is so much interest in this topic. That being said, I also feel like it is
We’ve had a lot of people ask us about courting. I know we’ve touched upon it in the past, but we decided to make it in a blog post all on its own. “You don’t date a married man…” Whether you live plural marriage or not, you want your husband to stay honorable to you, honorable to your marriage vows, or covenants, or whatever applies to your relationship. Marriage is a beautiful thing, and choosing to live your life with someone, and committing yourself to them, is a beautiful thing. You want to keep that relationship strong, and be faithful to what you have already established. The trust
Watching the Tell All! That was intense! We all got together last night and watched the Seeking Sister Wife reunion episode (aka the Tell All) and we were not expecting that ending. We are saddened to hear about Vanessa leaving the Snowdens. We got to meet them in person after the tell all and thought they were a great family. We respect that Vanessa continued forward on her path and stayed true to herself and the journey she needed to follow. Life is too short to not be happy! The choice is yours! Many have thought that we only live this way because we feel we HAVE to. But
Spring is in the air We’ve had a lot of really great but serious posts lately, so I thought I’d shake things up with a fun post! Spring has me in the mood starting up my outdoor hobbies again. The weather this winter was really wet- a lot of snow and rain- and now things are starting to warm up! I love getting my hands dirty in good soil and seeing things grow. When we moved into this house I loved everything- except how bland and boring the front yard was. Desert-scapes are better on the budget in the summer time, but I wanted more greenery. So about two
We had a wonderful Christmas and we hope that all of you did as well. We’re busy recovering from Christmas and looking forward to the beginning of the new year and the adventures that it will hold for our family. That being the case, this is all the blogging that we’re going to do this week. We’ll be back at it soon, though!
As we approach Christmas, we thought we would share some of our Christmas traditions with you, as well as an interesting dynamic we had to go through when we had our first Christmas together. Last year as we were all three coming together for our first Christmas together, we had to decide what to do. We realized that all three of us had different Christmas traditions, and extended families and we can’t all be in three different places at once. Tami & Colton, since being married, would just take turns with their holidays with each family…but now what do we do with 3? Would we only see our extended
This time of year is such a whirlwind of activity, and I have discovered I’m not very good at documenting all the activities, events, and interesting moments. This week has been fun and busy! Sadie is loving putting a new sticker on her tree every day, as well as a fun activity to go with it. Our activity on Friday wasn’t planned, but we ended up needing to move the sheep to another field and that ended up being our family activity. Sadie loved going out with us and it was quite the adventure getting the sheep to leave the field they were in and find the new one
